ECO|CENTER
Environmental Education and Sustainable Strategies
Eco|center was a research and design project focused on creating a high performance building for the Northwest. A tight building envelope, increased thermal mass and proper day-lighting were the fundamental strategies for the project. Others included; thermal conductance, site orientation for optimal solar gains, minimal site impact, pv efficiency and passive cooling/ventilation. Material choices were determined by the life-cycle of the product as well as their ability to increase thermal performance. Program for the eco|center included, offices, labs and a eco-literacy center displaying the bio-diversity of the Northwest. Eco|center's conditioned spaces consume 17.9 Kbtu/ft2-yr, far below 51.0 Kbtu/ft2-yr, the national average for code compliant buildings of similar size.
